Trainee Recovery Worker - ROAR

Job Introduction

Do you want to help build a brighter future for communities and individuals in Oldham in a sometimes challenging but highly rewarding job? ROAR is Turning Point’s alcohol and drug service and we are currently expanding rapidly following the award of new funding. We have a range of roles for people passionate about supporting others to make change. We have roles in different teams including:

  • Community based treatment services. : providing assessment and treatment in Oldham and Rochdale
  • Homeless outreach provision; Targeting homeless service users, offering a flexible and outreach response to highly vulnerable individuals sleeping rough or living in temporary accommodation
  • Criminal Justice rehabilitation/recovery services: Our Team here is one of the highest performers in Greater Manchester and works closely with the Probation Services, Prisons and Police to provide a rapid, tailored response to individuals that support their recovery and rehabilitation
  • Psycho-Social Interventions; This team delivers structured psycho-social interventions in group and one to level and supports the rest of the service to develop skills and knowledge to enable our service users to acquire thinking skills and behaviours to make lasting change.

You will be offered the scope and support to enhance your own career as you gain the experience and training you need to develop as a Recovery Worker.

During the first 6 months you will be offered a range of blended learning to understand your role, responsibilities and the sector you are working in. There will be further development opportunities available which may include qualifications or internal accredited learning.

Role Responsibility

Trainee Recovery Workers are just that: People new to the field of substance misuse but who share our values and passion for supporting people to make change. Our trainees are offered a comprehensive training and support package to learn all the tricks of the trade and progress typically between 6 months and a year to Recovery Worker.

Following a period of induction, you will take part in a range of core training sessions throughout the first year to provide you with the knowledge and skills to deliver a range of interventions and work successfully in a substance misuse setting.

During year one you will be accountable for:

  • Engaging and contributing fully with the training and development on offer
  • Developing the skills required to effectively triage, assess, risk manage and develop recovery plans for a caseload of clients
  • Work as part of a team and shadowing and supporting recovery workers and clinical staff as required in both 1-1 and group settings (face to face and virtual)
  • Developing your awareness of advice and harm reduction approaches through supporting the team and clients
  • Providing brief interventions and progressing during the year to carry an allocated caseload of non-complex clients
  • Actively engage clients in their recovery plans, supporting them to reach their personal goals
  • Develop the skills to deliver a range of online and face to face PSI groups.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of local community resources in support of asset-based recovery work
  • Assessing and identifying risks in your day to day work and acting upon immediate risk of danger or safeguarding issues
  • Ensuring all paperwork and recording in accordance with TP policy and procedure and follow information governance guidelines
  • Developing report writing skills

The Ideal Candidate

Essential :

  • You will be personable, a good listener and communicator
  • A keen sense of social justice
  • An interest in the social care  sector within  the field of drugs and alcohol
  • Emotionally intelligent and positive
  • Organised with basic IT skills 

Desirable :

  • Previous experience of working in a health and social care setting
