Homelessness Recovery Worker

Job Introduction

Turning Point, working in partnership with Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest and Antidote, provide the City and Hackney Recovery Service which works with local residents concerned about their drug and alcohol use.  The service works across each of City and Hackney’s neighbourhoods in order to be accessible, local and inclusive.  The fully integrated service contributes to recovery, social inclusion and improving the quality of life of all our service users in the City of London and Hackney borough. It aims to be shaped by the community needs and voices of service users, carers, families, communities, all staff and volunteers.

Role Responsibility

We are currently recruiting to 2 roles aimed at supporting individuals with homelessness access and receive treatment for their drug and alcohol needs:

  • Hostels Recovery Worker
  • Rough Sleepers Recovery Worker

Both these roles will involve outreach in the community and in-reach into hostels in order to reduce the barriers our homeless population experiences to access mainstream services by building familiarity and trusting relationships.

The successful candidates will have strong communication and partnership building skills, a solid understanding of the harm reduction model, be passionate around assertive engagement and EDI (Equality Inclusion and Diversity), be confident around safeguarding and around managing safety on outreach.

These roles are both office, satellite and outreach based and relies on strong time management skills. The role includes maintaining regular contact with your clients, offering advice, information and psycho-social interventions as well as providing assessments, risk management planning and working closely with our clinical staff around prescribing needs and partner agencies. No day is the same in this role but an ability to communicate effectively with a range or service users and colleagues, an ability to manage different tasks and a commitment to Turning Point values are essential. You may have lived experience of substance use/mental health/homelessness (self or a significant other), come with experience supporting people in health and social care or just have a keen interest in supporting this group; if your values are right, we have a role for everyone.

 

Hostels Recovery Worker

This role will sit within the neighbourhood opiate teams and will involve leading in regular in-reach into key hostels in the borough where individuals experiencing complex needs are housed. As a hostel lead recovery worker you will hold a caseload of service users with a history of homelessness who you will offer regular key work sessions at the hostel or in the service, you will be responsible for routinely reviewing their care plans and risk assessments to ensure

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that will support you ensure your clients access the right psychosocial and medical support we have available.

You will take part on outreach activites alongside our Community Wellbeing Team colleagues in Public Health England, to help increase our reach to the community and improve access to our service for all communities, particularly in “hot spots” of drug related activity where individuals might be most vulnerable.

 

Rough Sleepers Recovery Worker

The Rough Sleepers Recovery Worker role will seat under the Rough Sleepers Team and the successful candidate will hold a caseload of usually actively rough sleeping clients, but at times experiencing other forms of homelessness. As a rough sleepers recovery worker you will be responsible for delivering assertive outreach along our partners to engage individuals in treatment, you will conduct assessments in various settings and provide key working sessions to individuals in your caseload with the aim of supporting them to access the relevant support while you also work to identify and respond to their drug and alcohol related needs by engaging in goal setting and planning.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Requirements:

  • Understanding of the challenges experienced by people with a dual diagnosis (Mental health/ drug and or alcohol use)
  • Ability to work in a recovery orientated, person centred, non-judgemental manner
  • Ability to provide calm, consistent support to those experiencing a mental health crisis
  • Experience of working towards achieving individual and team objectives
  • Good time management and able to work to deadlines
  • Confident and effective communicator
  • A good listener
  • Understanding of the importance of professional boundaries working with vulnerable people
  • Collaborative team working skills
  • Adaptable and able to work in a challenging and changeable environment
  • Proven track record in managing incidents of behaviours that challenge
