Street Outreach Worker - LLR (Leicester)

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

Fixed Term Contract – Up to 31st March 2023

At Turning Point, we support people across the UK with substance misuse issues. We are in the process of launching a new Street Outreach project providing street-based outreach provision for young people and young adults at risk of serious violence. The aim of the specialist services is to contribute to the prevention and reduction of serious violence through the presence of Street Outreach Workers in serious violence hotspots across the city of Leicester.

As an Outreach Worker, you'll make a real difference in the community and to their lives as you develop the personal, flexible and realistic support packages they need to help turn things around. Passionate about people, you'll enjoy the scope and support to enhance your own life too, as you make the role your own as part of a friendly and multidisciplinary team.

Working hours for this position are 1pm – 9pm, 4 days per week including weekends.

Role Responsibility

Main responsibilities:

Street Outreach Workers will contribute to the prevention and reduction of serious violence by:

  • Using the reachable space that hotspots provide to help prevent violence in hotspots by acting as non-police ‘capable guardians’ through their presence and ability to mediate and defuse situations before they become violent.
  • Offering immediate practical and emotional support to young people/adults in hotspots including those with substance misuse needs.
  • Seeking to quickly connect people with existing diversionary and treatment services that can reduce their future risk of being a victim or offender of violence.

As an outreach worker, you will be:

  • Culturally-competent: Workers will be credible to young people and people with substance misuse and other complex needs have the insights and ability to communicate, engage and work in a way which is relevant and responsive to their identity and the cultural context in which they live.
  • Proactivity and persistence: to engage those at risk of violence recognising that engagement may not be instant and workers will be creative in their efforts to build rapport and secure engagement
  • Trauma-informed: Workers will be aware of the relevance and impact of trauma on young people, both as a result of the injury but in relation to wider childhood and adolescence trauma.  The service will be trauma-informed and seek to mitigate the impact of trauma, reduce its recurrence and support the young person to access therapeutic support where necessary.
  • Collaborative: Workers will build positive relationships with other services and projects and collaborate to ensure all of a young person’s needs and ambitions are met.

The Ideal Candidate

Building on your previous experience of working with young adults and people, you’ll have the ability to co-ordinate and complete care plans and assessments and possess knowledge of substance misuse issues. Motivated and driven to make a real difference, your work ethic will be strong too – as will your written and verbal communication skills. Above all, we’re looking for personality. People with the confidence and passion to fit well into the team and truly help to turn lives around.
