Stop Smoking Practitioner
Job Introduction
Turning Point’s Stop Smoking and Wellbeing Service (SSWS) in Hammersmith & Fulham provides free, evidence-based smoking cessation support to people who live, work, study or receive care within the borough.
Our service delivers both a universal stop smoking offer and targeted support for groups experiencing higher rates of smoking and associated health inequalities. This includes people experiencing mental health difficulties, substance misuse, people involved with the criminal justice system, and pregnant women.
We are looking for a knowledgeable, compassionate and motivated Stop Smoking Practitioner with a strong academic background in public health or a related health discipline and a genuine interest in smoking cessation, health improvement and behaviour change.
As a Stop Smoking Practitioner, you will manage your own caseload, deliver evidence-based smoking cessation interventions, work collaboratively with healthcare and community partners, and contribute to outreach, health promotion and the continued development of the service.
You will have opportunities to develop your career through a structured learning journey and clearly defined career pathways, enabling you to build on your strengths and work towards your longer-term professional goals.
Role Responsibility
As a Stop Smoking Practitioner, you will:
- Provide high-quality, person-centred, evidence-based smoking cessation support, helping individuals to quit smoking and sustain positive behaviour change.
- Manage a caseload of clients, including assessment, quit planning, delivery of interventions, follow-up support and accurate record keeping.
- Deliver smoking cessation interventions in line with national guidance, NCSCT standards and current evidence, including behavioural support and advice on pharmacotherapy such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
- Work collaboratively with GPs, pharmacies, NHS services and other healthcare professionals to support client outcomes.
- Promote smoking cessation, health improvement and the Stop Smoking and Wellbeing Service across communities and partner organisations.
- Identify, engage and support priority groups and communities experiencing health inequalities and higher smoking prevalence.
- Develop and maintain effective partnerships with healthcare, voluntary-sector and community organisations, supporting referral pathways and integrated service delivery.
- Participate in community outreach, campaigns, events and health-promotion activities to increase awareness of and access to the service.
- Deliver Very Brief Advice (VBA) and support the development of smoking cessation knowledge and skills among colleagues and partners.
- Maintain accurate client records, monitor outcomes and contribute to service reporting, KPI achievement and quality standards.
- Keep knowledge up to date through supervision, training, professional development and engagement with current research and best practice.
- Contribute to service improvement initiatives and work flexibly as part of the wider Stop Smoking and Wellbeing Service.
The Ideal Candidate
Applicants must hold a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification in a public health or health-related discipline.
A Master's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Improvement, or a related discipline would be advantageous.
Candidates must also demonstrate:
- A strong understanding of public health, health promotion, prevention, health inequalities and the wider health improvement agenda.
- Knowledge of smoking cessation, tobacco dependency, evidence-based behaviour change approaches, and smoking cessation pharmacotherapy, including NRT and other recognised treatment options.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication for clients, colleagues, healthcare professionals, commissioners and partner organisations.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage people from diverse backgrounds with empathy, professionalism and without judgement.
- Strong organisational, caseload management, time management and prioritisation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to remain calm, professional and resilient within a busy community-based service.
- Understanding of community engagement, reducing barriers to healthcare access, and applying relevant policy, research, guidance and best practice.
- Confidence using digital systems to maintain accurate records, monitor activity and support service reporting.
- Commitment to professional development, reflective practice, safeguarding, confidentiality and high standards of care.
It would be advantageous for candidates to have:
- Experience working in smoking cessation, public health, health improvement, healthcare or community-based services.
- Experience delivering smoking cessation interventions, including NCSCT Practitioner Level and ideally Specialist Practitioner Level.
- Experience delivering behavioural change interventions on an individual or group basis.
- Experience delivering Very Brief Advice (VBA), training others in smoking cessation, or supporting health promotion initiatives.
- Experience working with NHS, local authority, voluntary-sector and community partners.
- Experience in community outreach, partnership development, health-promotion campaigns, and service performance monitoring.
- A strong understanding of the needs of populations with higher smoking prevalence, including people with mental health needs, substance misuse issues, criminal justice involvement, and pregnant women.
