Mental Health Peer Support Worker
Job Introduction
Join us as we launch a brand-new residential rehabilitation and Discharge to Assess service supporting people with complex mental health needs on their recovery journey.
This exciting new development offers a unique opportunity to help shape an innovative service that supports people experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties to build confidence, develop practical living skills, and move towards greater independence.
At Turning Point, we believe that recovery is possible for everyone. As a Peer Support Worker, you will use your own lived experience of mental health recovery to inspire hope, demonstrate what is possible, and support people to identify their strengths and achieve their goals.
Passionate about people, you will work closely with residents to help them develop the skills, resilience, and confidence needed to progress through their recovery pathway. You will be part of a supportive and dedicated team, helping to create a positive, therapeutic environment where people can flourish and reach their potential.
About The Service
The Stewarts is a new residential mental health service providing two distinct pathways designed to support people at different stages of their recovery journey.
The service offers Intensive Enablement and Rehabilitation beds, supporting people for up to 18 months within a structured and therapeutic environment. The focus is on recovery, skills development, building confidence, promoting independence, and preparing people for successful move-on into longer-term accommodation.
Alongside this, The Stewarts provides Discharge to Assess (D2A) beds, offering short-term support of up to six weeks for people stepping down from acute mental health wards or requiring a short-term step-up from community services. Through structured assessment, regular reviews, and collaborative planning, individuals are supported to move on to the most appropriate longer-term pathway.
The service supports adults aged 18 and over who may present with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, co-existing substance use, mild learning disabilities, complex physical health needs, or behaviours that challenge services. Every individual is supported through a personalised, strengths-based approach that promotes recovery, independence, and social inclusion.
As a Peer Support Worker, you will draw upon your own lived experience of recovery to promote hope, empowerment, and positive change for the people we support.
Main Responsibilities
You will:
- Use your personal recovery experience appropriately and safely to inspire hope and support others in their own recovery journeys.
- Build positive, trusting, and therapeutic relationships with residents across both the Intensive Enablement and D2A pathways.
- Support individuals to identify and achieve meaningful recovery goals through person-centred planning and key working.
- Promote independence by supporting people to develop daily living skills, including budgeting, meal preparation, self-care, tenancy responsibilities, and community engagement.
- Facilitate one-to-one and group-based peer support sessions that encourage reflection, resilience, self-management, and wellbeing.
- Encourage social inclusion and support individuals to build positive networks within their local communities.
- Work alongside Recovery Workers, healthcare professionals, families, carers, and partner agencies to deliver coordinated support.
- Contribute to risk management, safeguarding, and positive risk-taking approaches that balance safety with independence.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to support reviews, recovery planning, and outcome monitoring.
- Support residents through periods of transition, including admission, discharge, and move-on planning.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting others through recovery and who is able to use their own lived experience in a positive, professional, and purposeful way.
You will:
- Have personal lived experience of mental health recovery and be able to use this experience appropriately to support and inspire others.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of recovery principles, mental health, wellbeing, and social inclusion.
- Be able to model hope, resilience, self-awareness, personal responsibility, and self-advocacy.
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive and trusting relationships.
- Be able to share effective coping strategies, recovery tools, and self-management techniques drawn from personal experience.
- Have an understanding of the challenges faced by people experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties and other complex needs.
- Be able to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team while also managing your own responsibilities effectively.
- Demonstrate a non-judgemental, compassionate, and person-centred approach.
- Remain calm and effective when supporting people through challenging situations.
- Have a genuine commitment to helping people build fulfilling, meaningful, and independent lives.
Most importantly, you will share our values and bring authenticity, empathy, and optimism to every interaction, helping people discover their strengths, achieve their ambitions, and build lasting recovery.
