Mental Health Act Coordinator

Full-time - Permanent                 

Grade 3 – circa £23,500 (pro-rata 30hrs but full-time considered)

As a member of the Risk and Assurance team, you will provide support to colleagues regarding the Mental Health Act (MHA), Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). Whist this role includes dedicated time as the MHA administrator for detained patients; you will also be part of the Risk and Assurance team and contribute to wider developments and projects in Risk and Assurance as part of that role.

Turning Point provides care and treatment to a number of detained patients in our independent hospitals in collaboration with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust who provide the Responsible Clinician role.

The independent hospitals are in Didsbury, Manchester and Swinton, Salford and provide recovery and rehabilitation support for detained and informal patients with up to 10 people being supported  in the Swinton service and 12 in the Didsbury service.

Both hospitals have received Outstanding ratings from the Care Quality Commission when last inspected.

Role Responsibility

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mental Health Act (MHA) coordinator to oversee the effective administration of the Mental Health Act, 1983, in our hospital services. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all requirements of the MHA are completed in terms of the administrative systems relating to detained patients including the responsibility to:

1. Review, maintain and advise on administrative systems for the Mental Health Act, 1983 (MHA) in conjunction with the relevant MDT, including the RC and pertinent Senior Managers including Risk and Assurance Dept.

2. Administer the Mental Health Act 1983, for Detained Pts. in our Independent Hospitals in conjunction with the MDT, including the R.C. all appropriate staff and managers, for all Mental Health services.

3. Ensure effective audits of MHA and MCA and DoLS paperwork at regular intervals in partnership with R+A colleagues

4.  Support the use of, and the maintenance of, the CIM database of all appropriately recorded Mental Health Act 1983 activity on CIM within the organisation.

5.  Maintain a database of current Mental Health Act Managers and arrange/support Managers’ hearings as required.

6. Liaise with the Mental Health Tribunal, Solicitors and Ministry of Justice, and all other external agencies as necessary.

6.   Report to and regularly administer the Mental Health Act Group and other committees/personnel as required.

7.  Maintain an up to date knowledge of current mental health law, and review systems, policy and practice regularly

8.  Assist the Business Development Team with respect to the Mental Health Act 1983.

9.  Assist and work with the Training Manager and Operations Managers to deliver Mental Health Act, DoLS and Mental Capacity Act training as required, ensuring all relevant staff and managers receive appropriate training and support for their role.

10. Acting as a source of expertise within the Risk and Assurance team to support colleagues across the business.

The Ideal Candidate

This area of responsibility requires a meticulous attention to detail in order to ensure all necessary paperwork has been completed and stored appropriately.

To be considered for the role you will need to have previous experience of working in mental health preferably in an administrative role with an understanding of the requirements of the MHA.

As this position will be working across at least two different sites across Manchester and Salford, occasional travel is required.
