Assistant Financial Accountant

Job Introduction

What does it take to become a leading health and social care organisation in the UK?

It takes people who can turn lives around every day - providing encouragement, delivering innovative services and generally improving life for individuals with a learning disability or those affected by drug and alcohol misuse or mental health problems. But it's not just our front-line teams that make a difference. So do the dedicated professionals who work behind the scenes to support the vital work we do.

Of course, to operate at this level we need to maintain a high performing and engaged workforce. And that is where you come in.

We are looking for an Assistant Financial Accountant to join our Finance team on a 12-month fixed term contract. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their financial accounting experience while gaining valuable exposure to financial controls and wider finance operations.

Role Responsibility

Working as part of our Financial Controls team, you will support delivery of accurate, timely, and robust financial information, while helping to maintain and support our financial control environment.

You will be working with colleagues from across the Finance team, and the wider business, supporting a range of financial accounting and control activities including;

  • Supporting the maintenance and continuous improvement of financial controls, policies and procedures
  • Daily cash flow management, including monitoring and analysis of cash flow movements, assisting with short-term cash flow forecasting, managing bank accounts to ensure balances are appropriate for forecast expenditure
  • Posting daily banking transactions accurately, ensuring cash receipts and payments are recorded promptly
  • Process BACs payments for suppliers
  • Preparing bank reconciliations, including investigating and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Performing data analysis and investigating unusual transactions or variances
  • Administration and reconciliation of corporate card transactions
  • Assisting with the preparation of information for regulatory, statutory and internal reporting requirements
  • Preparing and reviewing balance sheet control account reconciliations
  • Assisting with journals, accruals, prepayments and other accounting adjustments
  • Supporting audit activities and providing information and documentation as required
  • Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and drive efficiencies across the finance function
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across Finance to ensure controls and processes are consistently followed

The Ideal Candidate

As you will be responsible for the processing and integrity of financial information, you will need to be highly accurate, well organised and have a strong attention to detail. You will be a proactive self-starter who is comfortable managing competing priorities and working in a fast-paced environment.

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, is keen to understand the bigger picture and is always looking for opportunities to improve processes, controls and ways of working. You will have the confidence to challenge existing practices, identify efficiencies and work collaboratively with colleagues to implement improvements.

You will be able to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders and build positive working relationships across the organisation. You will be a reliable and enthusiastic individual with a willingness to learn, develop and take on new responsibilities with support from the team.

You will have experience working in a finance or accounting environment and a good understanding of core accounting principles. You will be confident working with financial data and have strong Excel skills. Experience of balance sheet reconciliations, journals and month-end processes would be advantageous.

Ideally, you will be AAT qualified, part-qualified, or able to demonstrate equivalent finance experience. You will combine strong technical skills with a positive, curious approach, taking pride in delivering high-quality work and continuously looking for ways to improve processes and outcomes.
